The purpose of this study was to investigate parental perceptions and support needs on characteristic-based school education for students with autism spectrum disorders(ASD). For this study, a survey questionnaire was developed and distributed to 320 parents in the area of Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do, and a total of 277 surveys were analyzed among the returned surveys. The results indicated that parents showed high level of perception in the importance of disability¡¯s characteristics-based school education for their children with autism spectrum disorders. However, their perceived level of implementation was significantly lower than that of importance in both total score and all 8 sub-scores. The significant differences were analyzed in terms of their children¡¯s inclusion, intellectual ability, and current level of school involved. Based on the results showing the level of perceptions and support needs of parents of children with autism spectrum disorders were discussed in terms of suggesting the future directions for the better school education.
